TL;DR

Most Shopify stores leak revenue not through the theme but through an overloaded app stack that slows the page and a checkout with avoidable friction. Audit and prune apps, ship a fast product page, and remove friction from cart to payment. This checklist walks each step in order.

Key takeaways

  • Every app adds scripts: audit the stack quarterly and remove anything not tied to revenue or a legal requirement.
  • Speed is conversion: compress images, lazy-load below the fold, and keep the product page LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile.
  • Fix the product page first: it is where intent is highest, so trust signals, clear pricing and a fast add-to-cart matter most.
  • Reduce checkout friction: guest checkout, express wallets, local payment methods and clear shipping and tax before the last step.
  • Measure with GA4 and the Shopify funnel: fix the step with the biggest drop-off before touching anything else.

A DTC brand on Shopify in Portugal rarely has a traffic problem, it has a conversion problem hiding in plain sight. The theme looks great, ads bring visitors, and yet the conversion rate sits stubbornly below two percent. The cause is almost always the same trio: an app stack that has quietly grown to fifteen or twenty installs, a product page weighed down by their scripts, and a checkout with a few points of avoidable friction. The good news is that all three are fixable without a redesign. This is the operational checklist we run on Shopify stores, in the order that returns revenue fastest, so you can start today.

Step 1 — Audit and prune your app stack

  • List every installed app and tag each one: drives revenue, legal requirement, or nice-to-have. Uninstall every nice-to-have this week.
  • Check for leftover code: uninstalled apps often leave scripts and Liquid snippets in the theme. Remove them manually.
  • Consolidate overlaps: one review app, one upsell app, one email tool. Duplicated functions double the script weight for no gain.
  • Prefer apps that use Shopify's native extensions over those that inject scripts into every page.

DATA

Each additional Shopify app tends to add render-blocking JavaScript, and store speed correlates directly with conversion: Shopify's own commerce data has shown that stores loading in roughly one second convert markedly better than those loading in five. Cutting five unused apps can shave a full second off your product page, and that second is worth real orders.

Step 2 — Speed, then the product page, then checkout

  • Speed: serve images in WebP at the right size, lazy-load below the fold, preload the LCP image, and defer non-critical scripts. Target LCP under 2.5s on mobile.
  • Product page: lead with benefit-driven copy, show price and shipping clearly, add review stars, trust badges and a sticky add-to-cart on mobile.
  • Cart and checkout: enable guest checkout, express wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay), local methods (MB Way for Portugal) and show shipping and tax before the final step.
  • Trust: display returns policy, secure-payment icons and real customer photos near the buy button, not buried in the footer.
  • Measure: use GA4 and the Shopify funnel report to find the biggest drop-off, fix that step, then re-measure before moving on.

INSIGHT

Optimize in the order money flows: speed lifts every page at once, the product page is where intent peaks, and checkout is the last gate before revenue. Fixing them out of order, polishing checkout while the product page loads in five seconds, wastes effort on a leak downstream of a bigger one.
