TL;DR

APAC rewards brands that go deep in one market before spreading thin across many. Japan demands craft and restraint. China demands platform-native content and local partnership. Southeast Asia demands mobile-first commerce and community trust. ANZ demands sustainability credentials and premium provenance.

ポイント

  • Japan: invest in product quality storytelling and retail craft — Japanese consumers are among the most discerning in the world and reward brands that demonstrate mastery, not marketing.
  • China: without a Tmall flagship, a WeChat mini-programme and Douyin content strategy, you are invisible to Chinese urban consumers — Westerns platforms are either banned or irrelevant.
  • Southeast Asia: TikTok Shop, Shopee and Lazada are the commerce infrastructure — build your social commerce stack before investing in brand awareness campaigns.
  • ANZ: Australian and New Zealand consumers are among the most sustainability-literate markets globally — green claims require third-party certification or they will backfire.

Asia-Pacific represents the world's most dynamic growth opportunity and its most complex brand challenge simultaneously. With 4.3 billion consumers across markets that span 10 time zones, 20 major languages and radically different digital infrastructures, the brands that treat APAC as a single region lose — and they lose expensively. The brands that invest in market-specific strategies for Japan, China, Southeast Asia and ANZ compound their returns across the entire region.

60%

of global middle-class consumption growth through 2030 will come from Asia-Pacific markets, driven by China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam (World Bank, 2025)

Japan: The Craft Premium Market

Japan is the world's most unforgiving and most rewarding market for premium brands. Japanese consumers are the most quality-sophisticated buyers on earth: they notice stitching, packaging weight, interaction details and service protocols that other markets never register. Winning in Japan requires three things: extraordinary product quality, meticulous retail presentation, and patient relationship-building with Japanese retail partners and cultural gatekeepers. Marketing spend without these three foundations is wasted. Western brands that win in Japan — Dyson, L'Occitane, certain LVMH houses — invested years in product adaptation before investing in campaigns.

China: The Platform-Native Market

  • Tmall Global flagship: the mandatory anchor for any brand serious about Chinese e-commerce — without it, cross-border purchase friction is prohibitive
  • WeChat mini-programme: your brand's owned environment on China's dominant super-app — loyalty programmes, private traffic and CRM live here
  • Douyin (Chinese TikTok) content: short-video product storytelling drives 40% of discovery for fashion, beauty and lifestyle categories in China
  • KOL and KOC seeding: Key Opinion Leaders (macro-influencers) for launch awareness; Key Opinion Consumers (micro-influencers) for authentic product review trust
  • Little Red Book (Xiaohongshu): the discovery and aspiration platform for China's Gen Z and millennial luxury consumers — essential for premium positioning

Southeast Asia: The Social Commerce Market

Southeast Asia's 680 million consumers have leapfrogged desktop commerce entirely — they shop on smartphones, through social feeds and live streams, via messaging apps and marketplace platforms. TikTok Shop has become the dominant discovery-to-purchase channel for fashion, beauty and consumer electronics in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Shopee and Lazada dominate general merchandise. WhatsApp and LINE are the preferred channels for customer service and repeat purchase. Brands entering SEA without a native social commerce strategy are solving the wrong problem.

INSIGHT

FOCUS POINT Agency's APAC Market Entry Programme offers per-market brand adaptation, platform-native content strategy, KOL seeding frameworks and channel stack recommendations — built by a team with direct market experience in Japan, China, Singapore and Australia.

ANZ: The Sustainability Premium Market

Australia and New Zealand have among the world's most sustainability-literate consumer bases. A 2025 Nielsen survey found that 74% of Australian consumers have changed a purchasing decision in the past 12 months based on a brand's environmental credentials — higher than any EU market. This creates enormous opportunity for brands with genuine sustainability stories, and enormous risk for brands making unsubstantiated green claims. The ANZ consumer will research your supply chain, question your certifications and share findings publicly. Show, do not claim.

DATA

Brands that enter APAC with a market-specific strategy (versus a pan-regional approach) see 3.1x higher revenue per marketing dollar spent and 2.4x faster time-to-positive EBITDA, according to Bain Asia-Pacific Consumer Growth Study 2025.
